Last week, we wrote to you to tell you about the statement we co-ordinated to call for an end to offshore detention.

Since we released the statement, we have been overwhelmed by the community support for the people imprisoned on Manus Island and Nauru. People have been calling our offices to find out how they can help. Thousands of you have signed the call for #SafetyForAll, and over 100 organisations have now signed the statement.

Yesterday, thanks to the generosity of members of the public and other organisations, we published the statement as an ad in yesterday’s Australian, to speak to politicians directly on their first day back in Parliament.

Meanwhile, the agony continues for those on Manus and Nauru. The torture that these people have endured is leading them to resort to drastic measures. Cartoonist “Eaten Fish”, for example, has been on hunger strike for over a week and his health is at serious risk. If our government doesn’t act now to find a safe, long-term solution, they will have yet another needless tragedy on their hands.

This is a crisis situation which requires an immediate resolution. Help us to keep it on the politicians’ agendas. Join the call for #SafetyForAll, donate to support our work, or sign the statement on behalf of your organisation.
